Car of the Month - August 2004
Bentley S3, 1964, #B246LEC
Standard Steel Sports Saloon

The park of Government House in Victoria B.C., Canada, was the location
where the photos were taken that are shown here; plus one from a yacht
harbour near that place. However this is no Bentley S3 that originally had
been delivered to Canada. This car car was exported to the USA. That is
fairly remarkable because in the US-market the lion’s share of orders were
for the sister model Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III; only those few who did
prefer the marque with the Winged B radiator mascot decided on a Bentley
S3.

Over the years this car has collected a mileage of only slightly more than
40,000 miles (ca. 64,000 km). A detailed service history does allow to
state that all maintenance work was executed as per schedule. It is fair
guess that 25,000 US$ which were spent between October 2001 and March 2002
on a complete overhaul of this car were an investment based on the idea to
return her to virtually “as new condition”. Though during that action no
amount needed to be spent on a new piece of soap. Such one was found
untouched in the “vanity cabinet”, an extra built into the rear of the
driver’s seat backrest. At the place that is usually occupied by a picnic
table, #B264LEC houses a vanity set comprising of comb, hairbrush,
adjustable mirror, etc. – including just that piece of soap in a small
box... |

The bootlid of cars exported to North America sported a peculiar
registration fixing, tailored to suit the rather small sized number
plates. This item is not to be found on #B264LEC but instead the broad
chrome plated number plate holder that was designed for other export
countries – and the home market, of course.

The classical lines of the body are enhanced by the dark paintwork, the
tyres with small whitewalls adding a nice touch. This Bentley S3 is
showing all the charme, that ensured the manufacturer to proceed with this
model series well into the 60ies.
