Car of the Month - December 2004
Bentley Arnage R , 2004, #5CX10101

The Geneva Salon was chosen – though Spring 2004 could be considered a
rather early date - to launch the Model Year 2005 of
Bentley Arnage R; at the same time 2005 alterations as regards the
Bentley Arnage T became series standard. A major
reason had been to bring the range ‘in line’ with essential design
elements of the Bentley Continental GT. By
direct comparison to the Bentley Arnage having been made up to then two
separate round headlamps each side instead of twin headlamps covered under
one glass were noted. The traffic indicators positioned in the front
fenders had gone; indicators now were located inside the unit that housed
Xenon dip beam (the second unit housed Halogen full beam). At a second
glance a revised bonnet line became obvious, no longer was the bonnet
‘divided’ by a centre chrome strip.

The interior had become subject of an up-date too, e.g. An up-date
interior design showed a new dashboard top and what were described as
‘non-critical controls’ in Bentley parlance hidden behind veneered panels.
Access to such secondary controls needed to move the panel first. |

Careful study of the list “Technical Specifications” revealed
modifications of engine and suspension. As regards the power plant the
2005 model year Arnage does comply with the stringent European emission
regulations (EU4) and is of the standard to be rated as a Low Emission
Vehicle (LEV) in the USA. The overall settings of the suspension had been
revised to achieve a new level of handling response. The lower mounting
point of the rear damper had been repositioned and detailed changes to
spring, damper and bush rates had been executed.

The basic price of ca. £160,000 (EUR 216.000) was just that, a basis. Most
customers did order extras from Mulliner packages or did insist on
particular details to be added as per their personal specification. In
conjunction with varying amounts of VAT – depending on individual markets
– a considerable amount could be added to the basic price. The subject of
coin however didn’t seem to be a prohibitive barrier. Neither any idea
that perhaps within the rather near future the 4-Door variants might be
substituted entirely by a new model range developed from the Bentley
Continental GT. The sales figure of the Bentley Arnage was higher than the
combined sales figures of the competing models, the
Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Maybach.
