Car of the Month - June 2010
Rolls-Royce Corniche III, 1992, #MCX30617
 Mulliner Park Ward Drophead Coupé

Rolls-Royce Corniche III

In economic terms the year 1991 was a difficult one for the English motor car manufacturer, because market problems led to an immense decline in sales. The total number of automobiles delivered to customers (at that time the Bentley brand was owned, too, so the figures include Bentley motor cars) was 1,722 in 1991. That was a minus of 48 % compared to the sales figures of the previous year. The workforce was cut considerably with the number of employees reduced by 1,200. Production at Hythe Road, London, where Mulliner Park Ward over decades had their major basis, was closed down entirely. The building was shut, the complete area was sold.

When in September 1991 the "Press & Publicity Department" published their "News Release" not a single word gave any hint as regards the situation that was less than favourable. Instead the image was polished by highlighting the succes again that previously had been achieved: "…in 1990 in Europe with 556 units a new record…Germany with 159 sold cars did become the Market Number 1 for Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars in Europe…"

The "News Release" included a detailed description of the various models for that year and as regards the Rolls-Royce Corniche III did state: "The Corniche III is a combination of State of the Art technical features in traditional Rolls-Royce quality as found on the 4-door models with the designer-idea of a breathtaking drophead coupé, whose charisma and elegance are timeless." – Indeed a detailed inspection did show that certainly there was sufficient reason for such an euphoric statement. Although this model’s launch dated back to 1971, i.e. had been some 20 years ago, the coachwork was still accepted as highly attractive. The technical components in a steady process had benefitted from a tremendous number of up-dates to modern solutions. And all those alterations had been fitted that were forced by legislation e.g. to increase passenger-safety and demands to protect the environment.

From the program of cars made by Rolls-Royce the Rolls-Royce Corniche III most obviously showed its roots being from the era of the Silver Shadow – nonetheless this model had kept pace over all the years.
