Bentley 4½ Litre, 1930, #AD3656
Vanden Plas-Style Tourer

Bentley 4 1/4 Liter

The coachbuilder Freestone & Webb had erected a Saloon in license to Weymann-Patents on the chassis of this Bentley 4½ Litre that was delivered in 1930 to Miss N.Q. Radcliffe Platt. Similar to the fate of a considerable number of Bentley motor cars from that period the original closed coachwork at some later stage became substituted by an Open Tourer. Quite often the design obviously was informed by that of those Bentley cars which had been successful in the legendary '24 Hours of Le Mans' (with 5 victories for Bentley).

Certain automobiles thus lost their original coachwork and further losses were quite frequently – especially on cars that had changed hands several times – e.g. as regards tools or owners' manuals. The Bentley marquee was taken over by Rolls-Royce during the early 1930 and that transaction included a tremendous amount of spare parts, etc. too. Rolls-Royce as the new owner from the very beginning were very keen – quite opposite to some (unfair?) remarks in the literature – to arrange service and support for 'old' Bentley models. Not least that was dictated by an impetus not to spoil the image of the brand.

That ist he background why already in 1933 Rolls-Royce did edit an NEW Instruction Book for Bentley 4½ Litre. Thus owners of cars from that model series were appropriately supported who for whatever reason had lost the Handbook/Owner’s Manual or had acquired a Bentley 4½ Litre with no handbook. A remarkable advantage of the new Instruction Book was the complete model-series was covered (essential because a considerable number of early cars during regular service had been up-dated with later modifications phased in during series production) – and even a description on the supercharger was added.

4 1/2 Liter BetriebsanleitungThe Instruction Book is available at a moderate price – enhanced by several illustrations (the new edition from 1933 had not been illustrated) and by further details from the archives. For example the 19-pages booklet by 'Autovac' on that company's petrol supply system is attached. Thus someone behind the steering of a Bentley 4½ Litre not only has access to instructions on running and maintenance but to information on petrol supply, too.
