Bentley Brooklands Coupe

When in 1907 the Brooklands race-track was opened that was regarded as an engineering marvel. Completed in just nine month the 3 ¼ mile circuit did permit high-speed racing due to its broad track with high banking. Over the years until WWII brought such activities to a halt Bentley had been prominent among the competitors at Brooklands. 169 podium positions, including more than 70 race victories at Brooklands were good reason for Bentley to choose ‘Brooklands’ as a model designation.

It cannot be excluded that sooner or later there will occur some confusion because with a distance of some 10 years after a 4-door saloon had been listed as Bentley Brooklands the manufacturer decided to position at the product portfolio’s very top the entirely new Bentley Brooklands Coupé as the company’s flagship. The luxurious 2.6-tonne, 530bhp cruiser offered the whole spectrum of top-achievements by Bentley: immense power packed in a most attractive design and down to the least item made perfectly well from exquisite materials. The launch of this ‘new’ Bentley Brooklands coincided with the Brookslands centenary in 2007.

The manufacturer had been well aware that worldwide only a limited market niche existed for a big, sporting long-distance tourer. From the very beginning plans were on a production figure of but slightly more than 500 examples over a period that set end of production in 2010. The initial sales success was so promising that there was certain speculation whether or not the number of cars made to this pattern might be increased. However any thoughts in that direction crumbled when the equivalent of emergency braking resulted from the international financial crisis. Basically changed market conditions did not even permit to find a sufficient number of buyers for what originally had been anticipated as production figure. A Bentley Brookslands Coupé is seldom seen even at Bentley-meetings, in traffic it is an extremely rare event to spot one.
